Engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. First edition, variant binding. Oblong 4o. [44]pp, 20 illustrated pages. Original cloth-backed glazed pictorial boards, design featuring four young girls (three with giant apples, one with a rolling pin) on the front cover only. Red cloth spine, dark blue endpapers. London, George Routledge & Sons. [1886]

An eye-catching seminal work of Greenaway's. Her alphabet with the apple pie at the core - describing the things children will do to acquire it, and what they would do once they've gained it: "C Cut It", "D Dealt It", "E Eat It", "F Fought for It", "L Longed for It" etc.

Variant binding, unrecorded in Schuster and Engen: a combination of Schuster and Engen 1a and 1b. Correct cover design (as in 1a), red cloth spine, dark blue endpapers (as in 1a), back cover blank (as in 1b). All edges yellow (variant): 1a calls for red edges, 1b for light green.

Boards lightly marked and soiled, edges rubbed. Internally faintly age-toned, illustrations crisp and clean. Otherwise an attractive copy of this much-loved Greenaway work.
