"Second edition", more accurately described as the second impression of the first edition

'Second edition'. Three volumes. 8vo., original blue-green cloth, front cover lettered and decorated in black, spine lettered in gilt. London, Smith, Elder & Co.

More accurately described as the second impression of the first edition, this copy doesn't quite conform to Coustillas' description, in that the advertisement leaf at the end of the first volume seems to be a hybrid state, between those normally found in the first edition, and those he describes as of the second edition. This was the only of Gissing's three-decker novels to go into more than one printing in its original form - only 250 copies were printed of this second issue.

It is paradoxical that the most famous expression of the struggle of the writer should be manifest in such a physically handsome book, something of a model for the upright stolid virtues of the late Victorian novel.

Spines a little faded, otherwise a really good copy, corners unworn, and bindings untilted. Rare in this condition.
