A presentation copy inscribed, probably to the actor and writer Sir Basil Bartlett, on the half title page to 'Dear Basil, with love and affection John'. Loosely inserted are four ALSs and two postcards from the author to Basil, mostly brief and amiable, some small news about current performances, one of which also features a signed message from Anton Dolin. Also inserted are an ephemeral programme of music headed 'Covent Garden', three newspaper cuttings featuring obituaries of Gilpin, one small leaf of paper on which is written Gilpin's address at the Princess Antoinette Villa, an invitation to the wedding of Gilpin and Princess Antoinette addressed to 'Dear Basil', a pamphlet advertising the 'Stephenville Festival', and a programme for Gilpin's funeral into which are also loosely inserted several newspaper cuttings featuring his obituary.
