Live and Let Die.
FLEMING Ian (1954.)
£4500.00 [First Edition]
First edition, first issue, second state dust jacket. 8vo. Original black cloth, front cover centrally gilt stamped, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket. London, Jonathan Cape.
A slightly bibliographically complex Fleming title, the present example corresponding to the First edition, first issue, second state as called for in Jon Gilbert's bibliography, albeit with one variant.
The dust wrapper has additional text overprinted to the front flap and centred "Jacket devised by the author and executed by Kenneth Lewis", positioned 27mm below the final line of the blurb, and printed in smaller font as called for in Second State dust jackets. As with some of the Second and First State dust jackets, the Irish Times Review on the rear flap has not been corrected and reads: "author'sskill", which is corrected to "author's skill" in some early copies.
The present copy also includes an uncommon variant of the second state jacket, with 'incredible' spelt correctly to the tenth line of the blurb on the front flap, which is usually spelt 'incrediblc' in early examples. However, Gilbert states in his Bibliography, "The appearance and position of the [Kenneth Lewis] credit determine the issue of the dust wrapper", and as such this copy corresponds to the second state. Given that "commercial printers such as the Alden Press used more than one printing press at a time", it can be safely assumed that there may be variants within the recorded issues.
An exceptionally good copy, a little rubbing to the extremities, and a little chipping and some tears to the top of the spine. Ownership inscription to the front free endpaper in pencil, and dated April 1954. Some very minor spotting to the preliminaries, and along the inner crease of the rear endpapers, otherwise internally very clean. Jon Gilbert, Ian Fleming The Biblography. A2a. 1.2.
