Our Mutual Friend.

DICKENS Charles (1864.)

First American edition, in four volumes. 8vo. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with spine lettering and vignettes in gilt. New York, John Bradburn.

A great rarity, in sparkling condition.

This is the first edition, either side of the Atlantic, to be published in book form, (as it was published in four separate "books", each as soon as possible, from the serial copy in England). This Bradburn edition includes eighteen wood engraving plates, after some of the forty originals done by Marcus Stone for the English serialization. The bindings for all four volumes are uniform, though the endpapers of the first two are pale yellow while those of the last two are pale peach - all original. The condition of all four volumes is very good to near-fine, with quite minor shelf-wear to the binding extremities (the rear cover of Vol. II is a little spotted and Vol. IV bears a bookplate of a Dickens fellowship). Podeschi A153. In two cloth folding cases.
