Original photograph of Churchill and Archibald Sinclair.

CHURCHILL Winston S. (c.1916)

£750.00

"... carved in rain-sodden bronze"

90 x 140 mm. Postcard printed verso.

A really striking print, with great patina, of Lieutenant-Colonel Winston Churchill, as commander of the 6th battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers, with his second in command (and close friend) Archibald Sinclair, both in trench coats and dogged demeanours. "It looks as though they were both carved in rain-sodden bronze, with all the sombre endurance of two of Rodin's Burghers of Calais" (Jenkins, Churchill, p. 297f). The photograph is normally described as having been taken at Armentières, not far from the French/Belgian border.

Provenance: Eddie Marsh to Christopher Hassall; Christopher Hassall to Una Rota (wife of Bertram Rota, bookseller), to long-time Rota employee John Byrne. With Eddie Marsh's note on the verso identifying Winston and Archie.
