The dedication copy, Dame Carmen Callil's, with her neat ownership inscription to the title page and book plate to front paste down, and with some of her underlinings. Dame Carmen Callil was the founder of the Virago press in 1973 and published feminist works and works by notable female authors. Callil was also managing director of Chatto & Windus and The Hogarth Press from 1982 till 1994. Jonathan Cape had merged with Chatto & Windus in 1969.
