Barham was Chaplain to the Chapel Royal, a tenure which afforded him plenty of time to pose as Thomas Ingoldsby and create this extraordinary gallimaufrey of cod ghost stories, myths and legends, illustrated by some of the great illustrators of the day. The book had remarkable success throughout the 19th century, but is less well known now, although Arthur Rackham illustrated a fine version, and Anthony Powell in 'The Military Philosophers' has his hero Nicholas Jenkins take up the Legends as light relief when attempting the summit of Proust's 'A la Recherche du Temps Perdu'.
