First edition in book form of four essays originally serialised in two issues of the Political Science Quarterly in 1887, with Clark contributing 'The Limits of Competition' and 'Profits under Modern Conditions' and Giddings writing on 'The Persistence of Competition' and 'The Natural Rate of Wages'. These studies 'of the process by which the income of modern society is divided among its principal claimants' were an important stage in the development of Clark's The Distribution of Wealth (1899), 'a landmark treatise in the development of economics' (New Palgrave).
