Returning by the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena; in the H.C.S. The Hope, Capt. James Pendergrass. First edition. 24 hand-coloured aquatint views. 4to. Cloth with leather spine, rebacked. Inner margin of browned and foxed title page has been professionally renewed as has the margin of one plate. A very little light foxing. Overall a good copy. xx, 246pp. London, J. Nichols etc. etc.

Charmingly described in the ODNB as an "artist and pedestrian," Wathen worked as both a glover and tour guide before departing for India and China in 1811 under the command of his old school friend, Capt. James Prendergast. They visited Madras, Penang, Canton, Macao, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. This work was well received in the Gentleman's Magazine and Wathen includes seven views of Indian scenery, six of Penang and Malacca, nine of China and finally two of St. Helena, all very fine aquatints. Abbey, Travel, 517; Lust, 386.
