In 1931 Hasegawa Nyozekan, Miyamoto Yuriko, Akita Ujaku, and Yamada Kosaku founded the ‘Soveto no tomo no kai’, a friendship Association between Japan and the Soviet Union. It soon grew into a group of over 170 scholars, artists, authors, journalists, lawyers and doctors. In November of the same year they began the publication of the magazine entitled ’Soveto no Tomo’, Friends of the Soviet. The group subsequently renamed itself ’Nisso Bunka Kyokai’ (Society for Cultural Relations with the USSR) in July of 1932 commenced publishing the present magazine. It introduced political, economic, and cultural developments in Russia to the Japanese readership. No issues are recorded after vol. 2, issue 4 in any institutions or libraries and we assume this to be a complete set. Vol. 1, no. 5 is a special issue celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Soviet Union, while the last issue is a special number on Soviet theatre. Very rare. No complete set in OCLC. Library of Congress have a set starting with vol. 1, no. 2.
