First edition. Numerous colour photographic plates. Folio. Original boards in dustwrapper, slipcase and box. A fine copy, signed by the photographer on front endpaper. Unpaginated. Tokyo, Ushio Shuppansha,

Shoku is a visual tour de force! A white box with gold lettering, followed by a gold slipcase with black lettering, followed by a gold dust-wrapper with gold embossed lettering, gold end-papers, a title-page back to gold on white, followed by 177 double-page colour plates of every kind of Japanese food imaginable: The fish is fresh (is that one still breathing?), indeed, it has a naked quality that only Shinoyama, could have imparted, the oil is bubbling for the tempura, the tonkatsu has been cut two seconds ago, the soba is being cut as we speak, orderly rows of shishamo are ready to be grilled, and the Kobe beef looks as if the cows have just had their massage. No text at all apart from the names and addresses of 58 restaurants throughout Japan. The book was priced at Yen 50,000 and it is doubtful that one would get away with less at any of the named establishments.
