Carroll Malone (1886-1973) came to Peking in 1911 where until 1917 he taught history at the newly founded Qinghua University. Upon his return to the United States he studied for a masters degree in history followed by a PhD at the University of Illinois. Malone’s study of the Summer Palaces is still regarded the best work on the subject. He sketches the history of the Yuan Ming Yuan, the Ji Chun Yuan, the Chang Chun Yuan, and the Yi He Yuan gardens in the North-west of Peking. He supplemented his work with a large number of interesting photographs taken after the plunder and destruction of these palaces in 1860 and 1900. They still manage to give a sense of the architectural vision that these extraordinary visions of paradise represented.
