A rich mix of articles about history, economics, and politics, written by both Japanese and foreign contributors. Vol. 2 includes an interesting article about the Iwakura mission and one on 'Foreigners under Japanese Jurisdiction'. Kokumin no tomo (The People's Friend) was published by the journalist and historian Tokutomi Soho (1863-1957) and it was one of the earliest independent intellectual magazines published during the Meiji period. Uncommon.
