Fukuhara Shinzo (1883-1948) is one of the grand masters of modern Japanese photography. Having studied pharmacy in New York he returned to Japan in 1913 and took over his father's company Shiseido. In 1924 he was a founding member of the Japan Photographic Society and became its first president. "Light that really dances, light that is flexibly smooth, and light that is vividly living are found here. The scenes are sometimes offensively heavy. But when the scenes in shadow are watched calmly, even in the darkest spots the full details are composedly given. The capability of photography cannot fully reproduce the multi-colored scenes of Hawaii, but it gave me an immense joy to have witnessed such living light." This is the last in a series of plate-books by Fukahara Shinzo.
