In the 1930s Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) was known throughout the Jazz world as the 'King of Jazz'. He was a composer and band-leader whose recordings were hugely successful. During his career he wrote more than 3000 arrangements, largely for Jazz orchestras. He managed to define dance-hall Jazz from the 1920s onwards. In 1926 he published his first book 'Jazz' which was co-authored by the radio host Mary Margret McBride (1899-1976).
