Suzuki Risaku was born in 1963 in the Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. He received a master degree from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1987. 'Kumano' is his first book. "Suzuki's journey from Tokyo to Kumano is at once a departure and a return; a reflection of a search for the lost. The series ends at his home town during the Shingu's Fire Festival held each year in the month of February... The images of Kumano suggest a territory embedded in history, altered by human intervention, and haunted by memory." (Introduction).
