First edition. 8vo. Original cloth in dust-wrapper and obi. Signed and inscribed to Yoshitake Rikio on front endpaper. Slight foxing to fore-edge, but overall a very good copy. 349, [vii]pp. Tokyo, Shincho-sha,

Inscribed to Oe’s friend and editor of the magazine 03 Tokyo Calling, Yoshitake Rikio: “For those who pass beyond the ancient regime of prose toward the republic of poetry. For those who pass beyond the place where the border eternally twists. Yoshitake Rikio, with love and thanks. Spring 1959. Oe Kenzaburo” [our translation].

This book deals with the trauma of a father whose child is developmentally impaired. Oe Kenzaburo's son Hikari was born in 1963 with brain damage and suffered as a consequence. Oe was clearly affected by his son’s autism and developmental disabilities, and a number of his books touch on this subject.
