"This is a book of memorable sketches of modern China, which gives at once the color and feel of the China of the Twentieth Century and lays bare the incredible bullying and robbing of a great but weak nation by most of the strong nations of the world." (text on dust-wrapper). Ellen Newbold La Motte (1873–1961) was an American nurse and journalist who travelled to China after witnessing the horrors of WWI in Europe. Her book on the subject (Backwash of War) was banned until 1934. 'Peking Dust' is an indignant exposure of the humiliations endured by the Chinese in the early 20th century. For this she was awarded the Lin Tse Hsu Memorial medal in 1930.
