This book is divided into two parts: The first contains ten letters written by William Adams (1564-1620) written after he reached Japan in 1600. He famously warned Tokugawa Ieyasu of Jesuit intentions, leading to the expulsion of Portuguese Jesuits and the prosecution of Christian converts in 1614. These letters had previously been published by the Hakluyt Society in 1850. The second part gives the text of over 200 letters written by Englishmen in the early 17th century, many of them published here for the first time.
