Handsome copy of the first edition of the collected novelle of Franco Sacchetti (c.1332-1400). Of three editions produced, all dated 1724, this is the true first. Of the original Trecentonovelle, 258 are reproduced here, drawn, as we are told at the end of the final one, from two codices. A practitioner of the novella form, merchant, politician and writer Sacchetti indulged in the ‘vivid narration of day-to-day events and the petty vices of his contemporary Florentines’ (Papio).

Minor staining and browning throughout.
