2 vols in one. xii, 254pp. [1]f. (blank); [2]ff. 266pp. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label (spine defective at head, rubbed).

First edition of this novel by l'abbé Antoine Sabatier de Castres (1742-1817), Barbier records a further edition of Paris 1788. Sabatier arrived in Paris in 1766 to begin his life as a man of letters, having abandoned the church, and was fortunate to have Helvétius as his patron. He became a prolific and sometimes controversial writer but this early work appears to be his only novel (see Nouvelle Biographie Générale, vol. 42, cols. 958-962). A little waterstained at beginning and end, bookplate removed from inside front cover. Barbier I, 402. Cioranescu 57961. OCLC/RLIN (McMaster University only)
