Villafranca [Amsterdam], [Daniel Elzevier],

A clean copy, in very good condition, of the third Elzevier edition of the collected works of writer and satirist Ferrante Pallavicino (1615-44), said by Willems to be the most complete and most highly regarded. It is a reprint of the 1671 edition with a new title, and the additional La Pudicitia Schernita and La Rettorica Delle Puttane, both dated here 1673. According to Berghman the majority of copies are not divided into two parts as in this edition; and indeed, Willems makes no mention of the separate title page for the second part and 10-page life of Pallavicino that begins it (repeated from the first part). The earliest work in this collection, La Pudicitia Schernita, was first published in 1638, and it was this that first drew the attention of the papal censors who would proceed to place almost all of Pallavicino’s writings on the Index.

Armorial bookplate of the Duke of Devonshire on front paste-down, and sticker with library shelfmark of Chatsworth, the seat of the Devonshires, on front free endpaper opposite.

Tear to fore-edge of M1, not affecting text, otherwise in very good condition.
