5-line initial in pale pink infilled with a strawberry, 10 one- and two-line initials in grey on red and brown grounds, full Ghent/Bruges naturalistic border composed of a large grotesque at the foot, coloured flowers (including a rose and thistles) and leaves, a snail, two butterflies and another insect.
Size of leaf: 113 x 87mm. 17 lines of text in a rounded italianate gothic hand.
A very fine leaf which was produced in Bruges at the greatest period of Ghent / Bruges trompe l'oeil illumination. Numerous illuminated manuscripts were produced there, many of them of a very high standard, such as this one, for a very wide market. Many of them were destined for Italy, including this leaf which is written in an attractive Italianate rounded gothic script. Other manuscripts would have been written in different scripts, depending on where the export market lay.
The leaf introduces Lauds from the Hours of the Virgin.
