De Tournes had published a polyglot edition of this classic courtesy book in 1598 but without the German version found here. In this edition we have a French version printed in civilité type, a German version in gothic type, a Spanish version in roman type and an Italian version in italic type, printed in four columns across a double page with a Latin version in roman type printed at the bottom.Il Galateo was, after Castiglione's Il Cortegiano, the most influential of Italian books on behaviour. It was composed by della Casa (1503-56) in the early 1550s at the suggestion of Galeazzo Florimonte, bishop of Sessa, and named after him. The first separate edition was published posthumously in 1559 at Milan although it had been first printed in a collection of della Casa's Rime et Prose in 1558.Provenance: "ex dono" inscription inked over on title-page. Inscribed on fly-leaf "Ex libris Cesari De guigues".A little browned in places due to paper quality, darker stain a foot of page for last two quires.Cartier II, 753.
