Bembo's famous dialogue on love

Three fine woodcut initials.

Small 8vo (160 x 107mm). 104ff. Modern half-vellum over boards.

An early pocket edition of the "Edition seconda", as it is described on the verso of title. The second revised edition of Bembo's famous dialogue on the nature of love, first published by Aldus in 1505, first appeared in 1530. Gamba states that it was printed under the eyes of Bembo himself who revised the text and made many alterations and changes; it was this edition which was favoured by the Accademia della Crusca. Structured in three books, in three separate dialogues, in each part a courtier in attendance at the exiled Queen of Cyprus' court in Asolo, Veneto, meditates on the benefits and cruelties of different types of love.

Provenance: Unidentified initials and "G.F. 1704" at foot of title-page. Lightly browned in places but generally a fresh copy. Censimento Edit 16 CNCE 5012. BMSTC (Italian), p. 80. Adams B580. See Gamba no. 133.
