Paris: Èditions de La Sirène,
The second edition of Apollinaire’s first book of poetry, originally published in 1911, and one of 1250 copies (the first fifty of which were printed on japan paper and the remainder, including this, printed on papier bouffant). It is decorated with Dufy's striking and charming woodcuts celebrating the fauna of each poem, ranging from the wise Hibou to the fearsome and alien Poulpe. Dufy explains in a short, explanatory foreword that Apollinaire's sudden death prevented him from presenting this edition to the public himself; in his stead, Dufy dedicates this work to him as a symbol of his friendship and admiration.
A good copy, binding a little soiled, final 5 leaves with a very short closed tear to fore edge, a handful of early leaves with dog-eared lower corner, but overall clean and bright.
