Large folding engaved plate of the author by R. Blokhuysen, title-page in red and black. 4to (195 x 148 mm). [11]ff. "558" [i.e. 564]pp. [23]ff. Contemporary blind-panelled calf, gilt spine in compartments (slightly scuffed).

Prosper Alpini (1553-1617), an Italian physician and botanist, graduated from Padua and travelled through Greece, Crete and Egypt from 1580 to 1583. Following his travels he returned to Padua where he was professor of botany and director of the botanical garden. He produced several books as a result of his travels, and this work was first published in Venice in 1601. This is the first edition to be produced by David Gaubius, the renowned professor of medicine and chemistry at Leiden University. Complete with the additional 6 pages inserted between pp. 284 and 285. Short tear affecting edge of folding plate, generally good copy. Waller 371. Wellcome II, p. 36.
