Paris, Ex officina Rob. Stephani, Non. Novemb.

A lovely, rare and 'textually very important edition' (Schreiber) of the fables of Aesop, printed in Claude Garamond's attractive 'grecs du roi' typeface. This was the authoritative Greek edition of the Fables until early in the seventeenth century and was the basis of subsequent texts. Estienne's edition also contains twenty more stories than its predecessors. This volume was produced while Estienne enjoyed the prestigious title of Royal Printer in Greek (he had already been appointed Royal Printer in Latin and Hebrew in  1539), which endowed him with privileged access to the manuscripts in the royal collection and to publish them, as here, with the heading 'ex bibliotheca regia.'

Ownership note on title page alongside printers device, and sparse annotation at heads of some pages (see p.40, for example) in same hand. This volume is in Maggs Catalogue No. 976, 'Ancient, Medieval and Modern', Item 206, Jan. 1977.

Minor staining of title page and general discolouration, but clean, crisp copy.

Adams, A277. BMSTC (French), 4. Brunet, 85. Hoffman, 64. Schweiger, 13. Renouard (Estiennes) I, 68.23.
