Engraved frontispiece, title-page in red and black.Sm. 8vo. ff. 352pp. Contemporary French calf, gilt and panelled back.
Second edition of this work which describes an imaginary journey to the island of the hermaphrodites, published over a century after the first edition of 1605; other editions appeared in 1726 and 1744. The work is biting satire on the court of Henri II, with the author using the concept of hermaphroditism to show the effeminacy of members of the court. It is also an important example in the genre of imaginary voyages, and sets out to portray the journey like an account of a genuine voyage.
