3 parts in one.. 8vo. Middle Hill boards, uncut

Important edition of these histories. The author was born at Pesmé in Comté in 1563 and died at Toulouse in 1621. He was a follower of the Duc de Guise but later became a supporter of Henri IV in 1594 and became his historiographer, Hauser writes of this work: "Pure compilation, mêlée de résumées de pièces et de digressions nombreuses, mais faite beaucoup d'intelligence par un catholique navarriste". The history is in five books of which the fifth book has its own title-page; this part carries the history from 1589-1598 and was the object of innumerable and unsuccessful protests by Mathieu about the many unauthorised and inaccurate interpolations. Mathieu's friendship with Henry IV makes this one of his more reliable works. The third part contains various edicts of Henry IV and a history of France and Spain (referred to on the first title-page).Copy of Sir Thomas Phillipps and bound in his distinctive Middle Hill Boards.
