2 parts in one vol. 12mo. (140 x 75mm.). 281pp. [3]ff.; 148pp. [4]ff., early 19th century English straight-grained red morocco, gilt fillet border, gilt ornament at each corner, gilt and lettered spine, g.e. (joints lightly rubbed).

First edition of this often reprinted work (including one edition printed at Virginopolis). It has a second dedication to that paragon of Catalan learning Juliana Morell (1593-1653) a Dominican nun, who came originally from Barcelona, who in despite of her father's wishes took the veil in 1609.The German lawyer Kornmann's work on virginity is mostly based on classical and theological sources such as Pliny, Isidore of Seville and Bartholomaeus Anglicus but includes more recent commentators such as Scaliger, as well as his own theories. It is rife with magic, superstition and astrology, he notes that a scorpion bite will injure a virgin far more than other women and that a tree will suffer from a virgin plucking its first fruit. The second work concentrates mostly on sex. Both have an index of authors at the end.A little browned in places but generally fresh.VD 17 23:280041W. OCLC (6 copies only in US libraries). Thorndike VII, pp. 278/9.
