Second Aldine edition of humanist court poet Jacopo Sannazaro’s (c.1456-1530) seminal pastoral romance, Arcadia, and the first and only edition of his poems to be produced by the Aldine press, frequently found together. Composed in the 1480s but only published officially in 1504 in Naples (after an unauthorised edition in Venice, 1502), the Arcadia consists of alternating poetry and prose narrative. The Sonetti e Canzoni are Petrarchan lyrical poems dedicated to his mistress, Cassandra Marchese.

Neapolitan Sannazaro’s use of the Tuscan vernacular in a literary context was a significant step in the Italian questione della lingua debates.
