Autograph Letter Signed ("Palmerston") to "Dear Nightingale" [William Edward Nightingale], telling him of the death of "poor Fleming".

2 pages 8vo with integral blank leaf, C[arlton] T[errace], 5 August 1844.

Lord Palmerston, who had an estate in Hampshire, was a neighbour and friend of the Nightingales. Indeed, during the Crimean War, his support for Florence Nightingale's work proved invaluable. The "poor Fleming" mentioned in this letter was another neighbour, John Fleming whose political views differed somewhat, having been described as "a genuine Tory gentleman of the old rock".

"I have sent the Tithe Paper signed by me to Messrs Dunn at Alresford. . .

You will be sorry to hear of the Death of poor Fleming; He died at the port of the Piraeus in his yatch [sic] about the end of July. He arrived there in the last stage of chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane, & was too ill to be removed on shore, and he died about ten days afterwards . . . We are starting the end of this week for a tour through Germany but shall be at Broadlands towards the end of October."
