with two words, "eleventh Novr.", in his hand, Hardy's reply on a pre-printed postcard saying he cannot be present at a meeting of the Dramatists' Club. 1 page oblong 8vo , n.d. [postmarked 6 November 1914].

In his later years Hardy often travelled up London to attend literary and social events. The postcard has on the verso the pre-printed reply address of H.M. Paull, the Honorary Secretary of the Dramatists' Club. Henry Major Paull (1854-1934) was a moderately successful playwright, author of such now-forgotten works as The Gentleman Whip and The Fortunes of Fan. The Dramatists' Club was founded in 1909 and its members included George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Wing Pinero, Somerset Maugham, although G. B. Shaw was expelled from the club in 1915 due to his vocal opinions on World War I.
