explaining his inability to assist in nominating Somerset's son for Charterhouse.

2 pages 8vo, Knowsley, 19 January 1861.

Major Somerset had evidently appealed to Lord Derby, as a governor of Charterhouse, to nominate his son for the school.

"I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 15th Inst. applying for a nomination to the Charter House in favour of your third son, who will not attain his 6th year till July next. As far as can be calculated, my next turn for presentation will occur in about 2½ years; after which it will be five or six more before I have another; so that it is most probable that I shall not have any during the period of your son's eligibility. It is however fair to add that my list of Candidates is already so large, that I could not honestly hold out much hope, in any case, of being able to meet your wishes."

There are remains of glue stains to the front of the letter from previous mounting.
