Benjamin Maggs

Modern Books

Prior to joining Maggs Brothers full time, Benjamin studied towards a degree in archaeology at Cardiff University and later worked for a time as a chef at ‘the best small restaurant in Essex.’ Suitably chastised by reality, he came to Maggs in 2013 to work on several projects including a collection of Chinese opium pipes and a set of Sangorski & Sutcliffe fine bindings, given by the binders to Florence Ada Maggs as Christmas gifts.

He now works in the modern department while studying part-time towards a master’s degree in Book History at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, and has been charged with reinvigorating the shop’s selection of private press works. His interests, literary and otherwise, include works from the ‘golden age’ of science fiction, the theory and practice of bookmaking past, present and future, and bicycle racing in which he competes, with more enthusiasm than ability, in the disciplines of road, track and cyclocross.
