"All among the Hottentots Capering Ashore"!!

CRUIKSHANK, (Godfrey).

TR29362

or the Blessings of Emigration to the Cape of Forlorn/ Good Hope (ie) to be half roasted by the Sun & Devoured by the Natives!! recommended to the serious consideration of all those who are about to Emigrate.

Coloured engraving. 240 by 330mm. London, T. Tegg, September 7, 1819

A typically over the top caricature from Cruikshank showing British emigrants being harassed and eaten by the natives. The British Cape colony had been established in 1814 and with the number of emigrants on the increase, guidebooks soon began to appear offering hints for emigrants on the native population, their habits and customs. Despite the racist content the new settlers were the intended target.
