Port Arthur was founded by Sir George Arthur in 1830 the then Lieutenant-Governor, in an attempt to centralise all the penal settlements in Van Diemen's Land. Hext must therefore have made his original drawing soon after, since his regiment was stationed in Australia in 1831/32. Ferguson, 1661a.
