Two page als in black ink from Kate Greenaway to Madame de Bunsen, dated 5th May 1900 from Greenaway's home in Frognal, Hampstead, London. 


Apologizing for not going to an event the day before because she was "so very busy over some drawings so long delayed". She tells Mme de Bunsen that she has just been staying with Mrs Locker-Lampson to help her recover from "influenza".

In fact Kate Greenaway had been diagnosed with breast cancer at this time, although she always said that she only had colds and flu, and Hannah Locker-Lampson was very active in caring for her. She died from the disease in November 1901.

Madame de Bunsen is probably the wife of the noted diplomat and society man Sir Maurice de Bunsen. They had been married the year before this letter.
