One of only 20 copies on Holland paper. 8vo., parallel English and French text, entirely untrimmed in the original light brown wrappers, lettered in black, all over slightly soiled and a tear at the foot of the spine, preserved in a quarter brown morocco fold-over box, the joints a little scraped. Paris, Published by the Mercure de France. 1896


A defaced presentation copy, with the recipient's name and inscription cut from the top of a preliminary blank leaf, leaving Douglas's note "Naples, November 1896". Douglas has additionally annotated this copy in ink in six places: page 36: "Altered in later versions. The line as it stands does not scan. A.D."; page 54 where the printed dedication is poorly inked: "To Lucas D'Oyly Carte"; page 104: "The dedication is to Ada Leverson called by her friends 'The Sphinx'"; page 120 beneath the poem "Sicilian Love-Song" - "This was in 'The Spirit Lamp' my Oxford paper"; page 128: beneath the poem "A Ballad of Hate" - "This was printed by Harry Cust in the 'Pall Mall Gazette' about 1893" and on page 188: "This is very childish, but it contains some good blank verse lines. It is to be noticed that it emphasises the purity & chastity of the sentiments expressed". The Bradley Martin copy, with his bookplate on the box.
