"Without the sympathetic interest and practical assistance which Queen Mary has given, it would not have been possible to have recorded much of that which appears in the following pages. Her Majesty was able to obtain the interest of the King, with the result that His Majesty was pleased to give instructions that the author should have access to the material contained in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle, together with permission to reproduce illustrations of furniture, etc., both there and at Buckingham Palace. In addition, Queen Mary has been pleased to revise the proofs of this book, and to accept its dedication".
