Modern Books & MSS: Art

Ref: MO32875

Portrait of Edward Carpenter.

COBURN, (Alvin Langdon).

Image size 21 x 16 cm. Photogravure portrait, signed below the image by the photographer, and signed and dated, November 28 1906, by the sitter on the verso. c 1906

The best-known photographic portrait of Carpenter in fine state, signed by both participants. While not as original as a photographic print, the process of gravure was, in the hands of people such as Coburn, capable of producing very high quality images. A handsome image of Carpenter the co-creator, with sexologist Havelock Ellis, of the educational propaganda body The British Society For The Study Of Sex Pyschology and in effect a founding father of what came to be known as the Gay Liberation Movement.

 Date: c 1906
