The Zulu War - Battle of Ulundi: Final Rush of the Zulus - British Square in the Distance.

PRIOR, (Melton) & WOODVILLE (R[ichard], C[aton])

From a Drawing by Mr. Melton Prior, our Special Artist. Large folding engraved plate, 33" x 41". Light browning, old folds, couple of short repairs to the folds, otherwise very good. Supplement to the Illustrated London News , Sept., 6, 1879

A spectacular scene from the engagement imagined as from the within the ranks of the Zulu forces.

"Prior joined General Newdigate's advance on Ulundi, and he described for the Illustrated London News the life of a war artist in Zululand: "Our artist is an old campaigner, though still comparatively young in years, and his previous experience in Bulgaria and Bosnia, and in the Ashantee War, had made him tolerably indifferent to the danger of being under the enemy's fire."... He described how combatants were amazed to see him sketching peacefully while the battle went on. He was not always so placid, and when he lost his sketchbook during the Battle of Ulundi, he burst into tears of frustration until a general lent him his own notebook." [Hodgson The War Illustrators. p.113]

Prior's sketch has been "finished" by Caton Woodville, a highly talented Artist Correspondent in his own right, their combined efforts creating a thrilling image.
