Considerations of the Bill for the Better Governme

[CORBETT, (Thomas)]

By a Sea Officer. Light browning, small piece lacking from the corner of the second last leaf, entirely marginal no loss of text, otherwise very good, disbound. 24pp. M. Cooper, 1749

Relates to the Thirty-Third and Thirty-Fourth Articles of the Bill. The former laid down that an Officer court-martialled for "conduct unbecoming" should be dismissed the service, the latter calling for the court-martial of any half-pay officer refusing a call to service.

Corbett was made Secretary of the Admiralty on the retirement of Josiah Burchett in 1742. Previously he had served as Byng's secretary during the Expedition to Sicily, of which he wrote an account, and as Chief Clerk and latterly Second Secretary at the Admiralty. Laughton's DNB article on Corbett relates of him that during his whole time as Secretary he "lived on terms of friendly equality with the many distinguished officers with whom he was thrown in contact."
