Drophead title. Wing K260A (L,LLP,CS,EN;CDA,MH,NCD,WF,Y). Bound with a thick section of blank leaves at the beginning and end with a one-page manuscript poem at the front entitled "Verses written by C[harles]: M[arquess]: of W[orcester]: Aprill 5th 1698 comeing from Badminton", beginning: "In fierce disputes, let willful Priests engage / And want of Faith, & works, supply wth: rage ...". At the end is a leaf of manuscript recording the births of Charles, Marquess of Worcester in 1660 and his children and his death in 1698 (a similar leaf in front of this has been roughly torn out). This is followed by two manuscript sermons on "Luke ye 21 verse 19th In your patience possess yor: souls" (29 & 24pp.), and others on "Job 11th Chap: vers 7th Canst thou by sarching find out God canst thou find out the Allmighty to Perfection", headed "This sermon preached by Mr Powell at Badminton on Trinite sunday 1683" (22pp) and on "Job 1st Chap 21 verse ye Latter Part The Lord gave & the Lord hath taken away blessed be the name of the Lord" (28pp). Charles Somerset (1660-1698) was the 2nd., but 1st surviving son, of the 1st. Duke of Beaufort and was styled 1stly. Lord Herbert and afterwards (from 1682), Marquess of Worcester. He died in a coach accident in Wales on 13 July 1698 (according to Cockayne; the obit here says 8 July) only a few months after the verses on the flyleaf are dated and his eldest son Henry succeeded his grandfather as 2nd. Duke in 1700. Provenance: Inscription on the flyleaf "ffor his dear Cosin Mrs Mary Herbert" and signature "Mary Herbert 1690".
