The Dispensary:
GARTH, (Samuel).
A Poem. In Six Canto's.
Engraved frontispiece by Van der Gucht.
Second Edition. 8vo. [24], 94pp. Contemporary panelled calf, gilt spine (upper joint slightly cracked, headcaps broken and spine a little rubbed).
London: by John Nutt, 1699
Wing G274 (+;+). Without the final blank leaf. Nasty stain from spilt ink on the last page of the preliminaries and first page of text.
This second edition is considerably altered from the first edition of the same year, with the addition of a dedication to Anthony Henley, a preface and commendatory poems by Charles Boyle, Christopher Codrington, Thomas Cheek and Henry Blount. Written to ridicule the apothecaries of London and the minority at the Royal College of Physicians who were blocking the plan to establish a dispensary for the poor of London.
Provenance: Ink inscription on the flyleaf "Sr Halswell Tyntes Book" - either Sir Haslewell Tynte or Tint, 1st. Bart. (1648/9-1702), of Haslewell, Somerset, M.P. for Bridgwater (1679-97) or his grandson of the same name, the 3rd. Bart. (1705-1730). Also with the signature "Jo: Tynte 1705" of Sir John Tynte, 2nd. Bart. (1683-1710). The blank names have been filled in by hand throughout, perhaps with authorial input. Modern bookplate of Philip Hirst.
