Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) was born in Ireland but educated at the University of Glasgow where he was appointed Professor of Moral Philosophy in 1729, a chair he held until his death.

These essays on metaphysics, in which he was a close follower of John Locke, were first published in 1742 and are impossibly rare. This expanded text consists of three parts: "De Ente" (on being), "De Mente Humana" (on the human mind) & "De Deo" (on God).

Provenance: The Brown-Lindsay Library, United presbyterian College (bookplate).

 Date: 1744
