[MENIPPEAN SATIRE]

8 engraved plates including two large folding plates showing the Procession of La Ligue.

3 vols. 8vo. Contemporary sprinkled calf. 1752

An excellent copy of this fine edition of verse and prose satire which parodies the assembly of the Etats Généraux held in 1593, and expresses the views in favour of the claims of Henri IV while opposing the Ligue and its Spanish supporters. The work is divided into three parts; it begins with a burlesque description of the opening procession of the assembly and this is followed in the second part by a catalogue of the chief Ligueurs and imaginary speeches by real persons. Finally, there are miscellaneous satires and epigrams

The work was written at the moment of the defeat of the Ligue and was immediately successful. It was written by Jean Leroy, a canon of Rouen, with the collaboration of Jean Passerat, Pierre Pithou, Nicolas Rapim and others; this is an enlarged version of the 1726 editiopn with the additions of Prosper Marchand.

In excellent condition, but frontispiece lacking from volume three. Brunet V, 145. . Cohen-De Rici 939.
