JAMES, (Henry).
First edition, colonial issue. 8vo., a rather soiled copy in oiginal rose pebble-grain cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in black. London, William Heinemann. 1895
Prominently on the title-page is A. L. Rowse's dismissive note in blue biro: "I find HJ's 'manner' intolerable, like the stutter he had - the hesitations, qualifications, exaggerations of trifles, the indirection. The 'Elephant picking up a pea off the altar' - much to be said for HG Wells's impatience with it. ALR". There are a number of pencil markings and interjections throughout.
